I was coming home from a wedding in Dexter late this afternoon and I was listening to 97.1 FM – The Ticket. “They” were discussing Tony Dungee’s comments about taped footage showing Coach Ryan cursing, swearing, and other vulgarities etc. on some HBO football show following a the New York Jets practice session.
Most all of the callers – many of whom identified themselves as “Christians” – had no problem with any of Coach Ryan “tactics” and virtually all of the callers were very critical of former Head Coach, Tony Dundee calling “out” Coach Ryan for using “that language” when trying to get his players to be more aggressive and responsive during their practice.
The vast majority of callers, as well as the “host” of the show, saw nothing “wrong” with anyone using “that type of language” and thought that anyone who was critical was a “naive idiot”. I called in and got to the screener and ask why it was ok to use God and Jesus name in their swearing and not Buddha, Allah, Mohammad, or the Virgin Mary, Obama, their mother, or some pope, I was politely told that the station was switching topics and to call back some other time. Of course, when the station came back from the break they continued with the SAME topic for another 10 or 12 minutes when the Tiger Ballgame was starting!! I was lied to . . . .
My question is . . . what do you think about the obvious “language” problem in our society and in “our churches” among self professing “Christians”. Does Exodus 20:7; Ephesians 4:29; Matthew 12:36-37; or Luke 6:45 – apply?
I have gotten into much trouble because of my mouth. Iknow that this world does not care about whats said and how it’s said, They hear it as NORMAL TALK now a days . I get sick of hearing people talk vulgarly. I can not control the way others speak but I CAN control my speach. And I will . Thank you Pastor
Thanks Scott – I appreciate the support.
We live in west Michigan where the Christian Reformed Church is very strong. Although their doctrine specifies salvation by grace through faith – a point on which we would agree – there is no particular importance put on letting “no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth…” I have been at business lunches and dinners where the vulgarities are a flying until the food arrives – then the heads are bowed and “grace” is said. Shortly afterward the language returns to the profane. Caution: I am not saying all CRC members are this way.
Isn’t there something in that book about sweet water and bitter coming from the same spicket? “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
When ever I hear filthy talk, a thought comes to me that says, that person is not saved.
I had picked up filthy talk before I was saved in 1973. After I received Christ as my saviour I had the desire to clean up my tongue and did it. Now I can’t imagine using low life gutter talk any more.
inspite of changing jobs several times over the years, day after day im surrounded by a hurrican of vulgar speech in the work place.
sad testimony of the condition of modern america.
